August 5, 2011

Officers of the Chino Police Department’s Traffic Unit will conduct a DUI/Drivers License checkpoint on Friday, August 5, from approximately 8:00 p.m. through early Saturday morning, in a location where a significant number of DUI-related collisions and DUI arrests have occurred.

The Department continues its ongoing efforts to reduce the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol related collisions. DUI checkpoints are conducted to identify offenders and get them off the street, as well as educate the public on the dangers of impaired driving.

Over the last three years in Chino alone, DUI incidents have resulted in 67 collisions, injuring 88 individuals; the Chino Police Department is working hard to reduce these statistics through education and DUI checkpoints. If you are attending a social gathering or celebration where alcohol will be served, plan ahead and designate a non-drinking, sober driver. A DUI arrest can cost upwards of $10,000, time in jail, a loss of driving privileges, and increased insurance rates.

During the upcoming checkpoint, Officers will be looking for drivers who exhibit signs of alcohol or drug impairments; Officers will also verify proper licensing and will strive to only impact motorists momentarily. Traffic volume and weather permitting, all vehicles may be checked. If an Officer suspects that a driver has been drinking or is impaired, a field sobriety test will be conducted.

Members of the public are encouraged to help keep roadways safe by calling 911 if they see a suspected impaired driver.
Funding for this checkpoint is provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
